Making it Work

Portrait photography is awkward for both parties to begin with. It's mechanical. You're anxious. I'm anxious. It feels forced. Let's be real: it's a man with a big camera and a set of lights pointing at you, whilst expecting you to relax and "just be you", whatever that means. Initially, it seems impossible, but we get there. Eventually. Sometimes this happens through a bad joke, or a shared interest, or a discussion about what makes you "you". Sometimes we get there by discussing the act of "discussing" itself. It can all get very "meta", but it works, and we DO get there. Sometimes it feels like there's nowhere to get, and this is when you know we have arrived. It's a connection. It's intuitive. There's no engineering that. You cannot teach it. It's a process.

This is why I enjoy photographing artists: there's a natural interest in the visual, and in work unfolding naturally when we move out of the way of ourselves and relinquish control. Each artist (each photographer) has their own way of creating this "flow", and I am genuinely interested in capturing this.

The same applies for business people and people of industry. I am not only interested in the different areas of work, and the role they play within society, but also what makes that person tick on a personal level: what makes them do what they do. Wheels-within-wheels.

I love what I do, and aim to capture your own passion for what you do.
